WHAT TO EXPECT:

This introductory one-day course walks the beginning marksman through establishing a solid understanding of the basics of mid to long range shooting. In the first 3-4 hours of classroom instruction, we establish the “how” and explain the “why” of setting up a rifle, ballistic solvers, and external ballistic theory to assist the shooter in their first competition, match, hunting or class. For

the second portion of the class, we will then travel to a local 200-yard range for live-fire instruction. We will verify true muzzle velocity, zero rifles, build data cards, and become familiarized with unconventional shooting positions.

Course Content:

The following items are discussed addressed and practiced in this course.

  • Fundamentals of marksmanship
  • Safety and familiarity with each shooter’s unique equipment including mounting and zeroing
  • optics
  • Brief explanation of external ballistics basics and atmospheric effect on bullet performance
  • Downloading and applying ballistic software on each shooter’s device
  • (Kestrel/4DOF/GeoBallistics)
  • Verification of muzzle velocity through a Magneto-speed V7 Chronograph
  • Building each shooter’s range/target card
  • Instructing each shooter how to read and use their unique reticle regardless of which scale
  • MIL/MOA/BDC is used. (Dialing and/or holding)
  • Introduction to reading and correcting for wind
  • Fundamentals of positional shooting
  • Stage walk-through/prep (checklist) and common competition range commands.

What is needed / requirements:

  1. Students must be a min of 18 years old and must be legally allowed to posess and use a firearm. Students must sign a waiver of release of liability.
  2. A notebook and writing utensil.
  3. Personal Protective Equipment (chamber flags, ear and eye protection)
  4. The rifle and magazine if equipped. Ensure the weapon system is capable of 1.5 MOA (1 ½ inchgroups at 100 yards) or better.
  5. Optic and mount they plan on using.
  6. A phone OR electronic device capable of downloading apps from the iTunes or the APP Store.
  7. Additionally, a weather meter with a ballistic calculator or ballistic solver (i.e., Kestrel with AB or 4DOF) may be used.
  8. 50 rounds of match quality ammunition.
  9. Any support bags, bipods, or tripods the shooter intends on using (we have several newshooters may tryout).
  10. Off-site travel to local range and range fees paid directly to the range. Upon arriving at range a current member will escort you into the club house to have you join the Anglers & hunters. Cost is 70$ cash only and will grant you access for one year. If you are already a member there is no additional fees.

Upon Completion of the class:

At the end of this course new shooters will be able to apply the fundamentals of

marksmanship and safety in conventional and unconventional shooting positions while using their established Data On Previous Engagements (DOPE) coupled with ballistic software/solvers to engage targets in a typical precision rifle match or hunting scenario.

Following completion of the course, shooters will be given a 5% discount on any

optic, accessory, or rifle purchased that day from The Gun Pantry in Neffsville!
